Jodie Marie & Band returns to Narberth

Jodie Marie

NARBERTH’S Jodie Marie has come a long way since being ‘discovered’ as a teenager in 2012 by Bernard Butler (of Britpop band Suede). He produced her debut album, Mountain Echo, which launched her career on the national and international stages.

Since then Jodie has returned to her home county, bought and renovated a chapel in Clarbeston to create a state of the art studio, StudiOwz, with her partner Owain Fleetwood Jenkins, and settled down to write and record the album she always wanted to make.

Together they have made music that resonates with the traditional virtues that recall Bonnie Raitt, Etta James or Loretta Lynn. Others listening hear Amy Winehouse or The Black Keys.

They collect and use vintage equipment, the same gear that would have graced the recordings of Little Feat or Booker T.

Many good things came from the brush with stardom, particularly the long lasting songwriting partnerships with Ed Harcourt and Dan Smith.

The journey also helped Jodie find where she wanted to be and the value of authenticity in music. Like soul, it’s either something you have or you don’t.

And Jodie undoubtedly has soul. That is evident from even a cursory listen to the new album, The Answer, an amazing collection of songs, full of light and shade, space, passion, and beauty.

Now Jodie returns to her home town of Narberth to officially launch that album at The Queens Hall on Friday 26th November at 8pm with her full band – Jimmy Brewer (guitar), Tom Sinnett (bass), and Jack Beddis (drums) plus a few very special guests.

Support from Smith & Brewer – a duo with a contemporary Everly Brothers feel.

Carols and Capers at the Lyric

Maddy Prior & The Carnival Band

MADDY PRIOR (The Queen of Folk Music) joins up once again with the Carnival Band during the Festive Season for their unique celebratory show “Carols & Capers”.

Together, they mix renaissance, modern and ethnic instruments with a refreshing cavalier attitude and plenty of humour, putting their inimitable stamps on a range of familiar and not-so-familiar festive fare.

The combination guarantees a Christmas Party to remember at Carmarthen’s Lyric Theatre on Sunday, December 19.

Of all the festive traditions, few have stood the test of time better than the Christmas carol. Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band know this more than most, having been inspired by the music of Christmas for the past twenty-five years.

The very best of these have been brought together on one album now and for the first time. “The Best Of Maddy Prior and The Carnival Band” collects twenty-two tracks from across their career.

Along the way, you will find a mixture of the familiar and the less well known, all presented in a most unique style.

The singer and players guide us to beautiful places with extensive experience in folk, medieval, world, and classical music between them.

Telling the Christmas story in a variety of ways, the likes of “I Saw Three Ships.” ‘While Shepherds Watched’, ‘God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen’ and ‘The Holly Ivy’ are revealed as versatile, striking pieces of music with words to match.

Maddy Prior told us how she got together with the Carnival Band

“It was in the early ’80s. The BBC had asked the Carnival Band to play on the programme “Pause for Thought”. This was an early morning slot each morning for five minutes.

“Towards Christmas, The Carnival Band were asked to play a carol a day for five days.

The producer John Forrest knew of me from Steeleye and suggested that I would be ideal for The Carnival Band.

“I was asked to sing “Angels from The Realms of Glory”. It was incredibly high and incredibly fast; it intrigued me, it was great.

“I sang with them that year, then the next and has done so ever since. We decided to record an album and follow that up with a tour. That was over 30 years ago now”.

We asked what makes appearing with the Carnival Band special.

“They are all very skilled, mainly classically trained, musicians.  They come from a different way of playing to Steeleye or myself.

“It makes for a very interesting way of working.  I am a slow learner, and it takes me time to feel comfortable with a song, but once it all came together it was special”.

And what makes Christmas special for Maddy Prior?

“Like for everyone, it is about family and a particular atmosphere at that time of year. I always tour right up until Christmas, so I go to another member of the family’s house these days.

“Now the celebrations are for my grandchildren, notably for my 4-year-old grandson.  This year he will begin to understand what it is all about, which is very exciting”.

Celebrating Christmas after a long pre-Christmas tour must be tricky. How does Maddy Prior go about that?

“With family, but I also run a Christmas Weekend at Stones Barn between Christmas and New Year.  It is a course for people who love to sing.

“Some stay here, some locally and we all sing mainly less well-known carols, feast and generally have a great time”.

And a favourite carol?

“Angels from The Realms of Glory” is one of the most energetic carols, and the Carnival Band performs a fantastic arrangement. The lovely “Angel Gabriel” is also beautifully arranged.”

Big screen blockbusters are back at Vue Carmarthen

CINEMA is back and better than ever as even more spectacular new releases are lined up in the coming weeks at Vue.

Highly anticipated sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage, will be showing at the cinema on St. Catherine’s Walk from Friday 15 October, and fans can book tickets now. Tom Hardy returns to the big screen as one of Marvel’s greatest and most twisted characters, the lethal protector Venom. After finding a host body in investigative reporter Eddie Brock, the alien symbiote must face a new enemy, Carnage, the alter ego of serial killer Cletus Kasady. Directed by Andy Serkis, the film also stars Michelle Williams, Naomie Harris and Woody Harrelson, in the role of the villain Cletus Kasady/Carnage.

Epic science fiction film Dune will be landing at Vue on Thursday 21 October. Dune follows the story of a mythic and emotionally charged hero ‘Dune’, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding. With captivating visuals, mesmerising music by Hanns Zimmer, and talented actors including Timothee Chalet and Zendaya Chani, this film was meant to be seen on the big screen in all its glory.

Fans of Wes Anderson will also be excited by the arrival of his latest work, The French Dispatch, on the big screen from Friday 22 October. Anderson’s ninth collaboration with Bill Murray and eighth collaboration with Owen Wilson, accompanied by an all-star cast, tells the story of journalists set in an outpost of an American newspaper, in a fictional twentieth century French city, who write for The French Dispatch Magazine.

With more blockbusters arriving in the coming weeks, it is expected to bring even more people back to the cinema for the first time, as research from Vue’s Fulfilment Report, in conjunction with Kokoro, revealed that over a third of British cinema-goers have returned to the big screen.

The Fulfilment Report is an ongoing, year-long study into the nation’s relationship with the big screen and escapism, and has also found that two-thirds of cinema-goers say watching a film on the big screen would have a positive impact on their mental state that day, with three quarters believing the experience offers a genuine escape from “pings” and notifications.

Eduardo Leal, head of screen content at Vue Entertainment, said: “We’ve got a packed line-up of exciting new movies for everyone to enjoy over the autumn.

“Close behind the long-awaited release of No Time to Die, we have a combination of dramatic new films and blockbuster titles that keeps on coming. We’re delighted to provide another way for everyone to switch off from the outside world and get lost in great stories together instead.”
