A NEW steering group has formed in Llandeilo to achieve Fair Trade status for the town.
“Many of our local shops and venues already stock or serve Fair Trade products and I believe Llandeilo deserves to be officially recognised for this,” says co-founder town councillor Christoph Fischer.
“It’s fantastic to see so many businesses and stakeholders committed to Fair Trade in Llandeilo,” says Candace Browne of Y Pantri Glas, Llandeilo’s Zero Waste and Natural Foods store. “However, for me Fair Trade extends beyond insuring workers growing imported exotic produce like bananas and chocolate are treated fairly but also to trading fairly with our local producers and sourcing good food locally. As Chair of Slow Food Cymru, Slow Food Town status with a shared vision of “Good Fair Food for All” would also be great for businesses to work towards for our community.”
The group, which has representatives of several businesses and interested individuals, are currently mapping all products that local shops, schools, groups and organisations offer and are lobbying the town council and other bodies to get behind the movement by declaring their own commitment to Fair Trade.
“As town councillor and as individual I feel this initiative fits perfectly well with the trend in town for fair trade,” says Fischer. “As Member Pioneer for the Llandeilo Coop part of my role is to initiate projects like this and bring all parts of the community together. We already had positive replies from Café 139, The Lighthouse, Heavenly, Ikigai, CK’s, Crown Stores, Umami and Llandeilo Primary.”

BUSINESSES in Carmarthenshire are being encouraged to take advantage of council spending opportunities and give feedback about the authority’s procurement process.
As an organisation that delivers a wide range of services within communities, Carmarthenshire County Council buys – or procures – a variety of different goods, services and works such as construction projects on a regular basis in a process known as tendering.
The council wants as many local businesses – large or small – to take up these tendering opportunities to ensure local people benefit from its spending.
All council procurement activity over £25,000 is advertised on the National Procurement Portal Sell2Wales, and business must register in order to access any tender opportunities.
This is a free online service and allows business to promote their organisation not only to the council but to other Welsh public sector bodies, and to receive notifications about contract opportunities suitable to their field of work.
The council also wants a better understanding of any barriers local business may find stand in their way of tendering for these opportunities, and has set up an online survey to get vital feedback and support businesses to have the confidence to tender. The survey can be accessed online and will allow businesses the opportunity to request further engagement with the council regarding support and notification of upcoming tender opportunities.
The council also encourage businesses to register on the Business Wales Business Directory – a free resource where businesses can advertise their services.
Businesses can also use the council’s new Supplier Guide which provides information on becoming tender ready, how to find out about opportunities, and how to bid for work.
Cabinet Member for Resources, Cllr David Jenkins, said: “We have a range of tender opportunities throughout the year and we want to ensure that local businesses are in the best possible position to bid for these opportunities and understand the tendering process.
There will be occasions when we will need to focus on specific industries which may not be available in Carmarthenshire but we want to ensure that the spend remains in the county wherever possible. We want to continue to help grow businesses and create more jobs here in Carmarthenshire and will do everything we can to support that.”
Applications open for emergency financial support from Economic Resilience Fund
BUSINESSES in Wales impacted by the rapid spread of the Omicron virus can now apply for emergency financial support from the Welsh Government’s Economic Resilience Fund (ERF).
Economy Minister Vaughan Gething previously said £120 million would be available for retail, hospitality, leisure and tourism business and their supply chains affected by the move to alert level 2 announced by the First Minister on Wednesday 22 December.
Eligible businesses can apply for grants of between £2,500 to £25,000, with grants dependent on their size and number of employees.
The application window will be open for two weeks, with payments starting to reach businesses within days.
Economy Minister, Vaughan Gething, said:
“Following positive engagement with businesses, trades unions and other partners, we recently changed the eligibility criteria for the ERF support. The ERF grant is a Wales-only top up payment that currently supports eligible businesses who have seen a 60% drop in their income between December and February compared with the same period two years ago. The new criteria means that businesses in these sectors who have seen a 50% reduction in their turnover will now also be able to access the ERF.
“This means more businesses will receive more support from the Welsh Government.”
Non-essential retail, hospitality, leisure and tourism businesses in Wales can also receive support from the Non Domestic Rates (NDR) linked grant which is being administered by local authorities. Businesses will be entitled to a payment of £2,000, £4,000 or £6,000 depending on their rateable value.
Local authorities are also administrating a discretionary fund for sole traders, freelancers and taxi drivers and businesses that employ people but do not pay business rates. Last week this was doubled to £1,000.
The Welsh Government has provided in excess of £2.5bn funding to Welsh businesses since the start of the pandemic. Focused particularly on backing small businesses and Welsh communities, it’s targeted approach has helped protect in excess of 160,000 Welsh jobs which might otherwise have been lost.
